 1. Two Philly cops charged with brutality

 Philadelphia police officers Kevin Robinson and Sean McKnight have been charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy and other offenses after beating a man they falsely charged with assault.

A grand jury investigation resulted in the charges,  District Attorney Seth Williams said at a news conference with Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey.

 

2. School district questions math of pro-charter group

The Philadelphia School District says it could cost $500 million to enroll 15,000 more students in new charter schools – about 20 times the amount offered by a private group.

The Philadelphia School Partnership this week announced a gift of $25 million to “take the cost issue off the table” and encourage the district to consider 39 charter applications on their merits alone.

 

 3. The end of an era: RadioShack files for Bankruptcy

 Struggling electronics retailer RadioShack has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and says it will sell up to 2,400 stores.

As part of the bankruptcy plan, General Wireless has agreed to buy 1500 stores, and Sprint may open mini-shops in as many as 1,760 of the acquired RadioShack stores.

 

 4. Critics pounce after Obama talks Crusades, slavery at prayer breakfast

“There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency, that can pervert and distort our faith,” he said at the breakfast.

Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, Obama noted pointedly that his fellow Christians, who make up a vast majority of Americans, should perhaps not be the ones who cast the first stone.

 

 5. Obama poised to request authority to use military force against ISIS

 President Obama is poised to ask Congress for new authority to use U.S. military force against Islamic State militants, the White House said Thursday. But Republican House Speaker John Boehner warned it won’t be easy and that it will be up to Obama to rally support.
